Background In the 1960s mathematical work done by Edward O. Thorp Ph.D. revolutionized blackjack by proving that by assigning values to cards (see card values), counting them, and then varying your bets according to the count the player had an advantage over the casino. The technique that I use for this proof is set out below and is a variation of the "high-low system" first introduced by Harvey Dubner and modified by Sandford Wong in his book BlackJack Secrets. (Pi Yee Press, ISBN 0-935926-20-9) CARD VALUES for counting For counting purposes these values are assigned as follows. Ace = -1, 2 = +1, 3 = +1, 4 = +1, 5 = +1, 6 = +1, 7 = 0, 8 = 0, 9 = 0, Ten and Pictures = -1 The theory of counting is based on having more aces and pictures than 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 remaining in the shoe. COUNTING As the cards come out their values above are added or subtracted to get a running count. After practicing counting with Learn-To-Count Blackjack it will become an automatic process much like driving a car whereby you do have to focus but the actual process of driving is quite automatic and does not have to be thought about. TRUE COUNT This is the running count divided by the remaining number of decks. This figure does not have to be 100% accurate and erring on the safe side is recommended. Of course Learn-To-Count BlackJack being a software product is always accurate but in real life it is not essential. For example if the running count is 20 and about 4½ decks (of 8 deck shoe) is remaining then divide by 5 to give you a true count count of 4. This gives a calculation of "the true worth" of the count based on the position within the shoe. Basically the fewer the cards remaining the better are your chances of winning with a tens rich shoe. While this may seem excessively hard initially, once you master true counting it's like getting into a true sports car and driving it as it was meant to be driven. By using only Basic Strategy the casino has about a ½% advantage over a player, however with every positive true count point the advantage shifts by ½% to you. So a true count of say 4 gives you a 1½% advantage over the casino. Now this may not seem much but when the true count is positive you also increase your bet so effectively the real advantage is a good deal greater. BETTING At the start of the shoe seat 5 bets 1 chip ($10) per hand until the true count reaches 2 and then ALL seats are bet 5 chips ($50). In reality a player could practically only bet a maximum of two seats on either side but it's quicker to prove with all seat betting. BASIC STRATEGY A real expert counter will vary the Basic Strategy according to the true count value to totally maximize the advantage over the casino. OPTIONS The following options are fixed for the proof but in the Learn-To-Count BlackJack Professional Edition EVERYTHING to do with the counting proof will be able to be changed to fine tune your game for the casinos in your area. Also in the Pro edition you will be able to generate tens of thousands of games very quickly (cards will not be displayed because it slows things down) to a database for analysis by tools contained in the Pro edition as well as other tools found in Excel and statistical software packages.
